Two of the most common types of headaches are caused by tension and migraine. Traditional Chinese Medicine recognizes these headaches as a clinical condition, not a symptom of other disorders caused by other medical conditions such as sinus, allergies, dental disorders or head injury.

Tension headaches tend to recur and usually last for several days. Millions of us have experienced some sort of a headache in our lives. They are experienced as a dull pressure which may be mild or moderate. Even when the head pain is not severe, we spend valuable time in seeking relief.

The first course of action is to reach out for pain medications. Unfortunately, common drugs simply suppress the pain and over time, cause a plethora of unwanted side effects such as drug interactions, ulcers or other gastrointestinal problems. Acupuncture on the other hand, offers a safe and comprehensive diagnostic protocol that addresses the root cause of the headaches, while increasing the flow of Qi throughout the body, improving the quality of blood and strengthening the immune system.

Migraine headaches are often triggered by emotional stress, insomnia, hypertension and hormonal fluctuations in women during their menstrual cycle, when oestrogen levels are low, making them more prone to having attacks than men.

However, many men experience migraines too. For men, the triggers are often fast food, or eating the wrong food, with allergic reactions to certain fermented foods, MSG, soy sauce, red wine, cheese, chocolate, etc. If you are prone to migraines, it is beneficial to have regular meals, sound sleep and to remain well hydrated.

After an acupuncture treatment, most people report positive side benefits of increased relaxation, improved sleep and a general sense of well-being. Migraine pain is usually experienced on one side, in throbbing pulses. It is often accompanied by nausea and/or vomiting, with sensitivity to light or noise. Some persons see bright lines or dots and have blurry vision or blind spots. Others experience vertigo, imbalance, loss of memory and numbness. Migraine pain can be disabling, causing people to miss work or other activities often leading to a breakdown in relationships.

Acupuncturists are aware of the powerful interplay between our body and our emotions. When we are emotionally upset, our internal environment is compromised. On the other hand, when we experience physical problems, our emotions are greatly affected.

Over time, this leads to stagnant Qi or depressed Qi, causing disharmony, stress, lack of sleep. This diagnosis is unique to acupuncture and to Chinese Medicine.

By treating the body as a whole, unique organism, acupuncture supports a safe recovery from migraines and headaches, reduces their severity and frequency, and facilitates a recovery that is exponentially better than the sum of its individual treatment modalities.

Dr. Wu's treatments are completely drug-free and often include Cupping and Tuina Massage as needed.

Flu, Colds and Migraine in Calgary

Each year, the cold season is particularly trying for Calgarians, especially if they are affected by the Chinook.

Flu and cold are caused by viruses (not bacteria), thereby completely disabling antibiotics from having any effect on them.

A good way to boost our immunity and to maintain our health is to get a series of acupuncture treatments in advance, so that we have increased protectionduring the winter.

At [Better], a Medical Center for Complete Living, our acupuncture treatments are complemented by Cupping, Tuina massage and Chinese herbs (as needed), making this protocol one of the safest and most effective treatments for flu, cold and migraine in adults and small children.
